Bash lines wrapping

I am having a lot of troubles with line wrapping in bash, especially via ssh. In its best state the line wraps around and starts to overwrite itself in the beginning. In the worst case scenario it starts to overwrite itself anywhere in the line and each time a new character is typed it moves the line up and jumps to another place in the line. Really annoying. Additionally, when I ssh to another box (be it Linux or OpenBSD) it always reaches the "end" and starts to wrap before the actual end of aterm's graphical borders, if you know what I mean.

How hard is it to just type until I reach the end of aterm and then everything moves up one line and I continue to write at the beginning of a new, empty line at the bottom? Or even better, don't wrap at all, keep everything on one line.

Sorry if no one understands me but the problem is not very consistent, all I can say is that whenever bash decides that I have typed too much it messes up everything.

Sounds more like a termcap / terminfo definition problem to me.

OK, I am having a hard time figuring out what to look for in termcap or terminfo. The documentation seems to be a bit too unreadable for me. Can you point out what to look for?

The problem occurs both in OpenBSD and Linux, as long as I ssh to another machine.
