Angry Bad redrawing

I was using a gui version of du the other day and had another app open and decided to drag the title across the screen and saw horribly delayed redrawing. It took several seconds before the 'shadows' of it path disappeared. I've got 32 megs of video ram so I would think that the redrawing of dragging the window wouldn't be that poor. On the exact same hardware win32 doesn't have redraw problems until one gets a considerbly greater number of windows open. What could be causing such poor performance?
