I am completely new to Linux and have just recently installed Fedora Core 4. Installation went fine (I think!), now having problems trying to install software. Read a few posts about Yum and looked up few things on Google. Managed to configure Yum (using guidelines found on internet), but having no luck with basic installation of antivirus (avg free) or anti-spyware software.

Have opened terminal and logged in as root. Trying to install BitDefender-Console-Antivirus with yum install command. Keep receiving following message: Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/yum", line 22, in ?
import yummain
ImportError: Bad magic number in /usr/share/yum/yummain.pyc

I know I am doing something wrong, but as I said, I am totally new to Linux having always used Windows in the past, and any help from anyone more experienced would be appreciated.

I would not know how to install BitDefender but I believe clamav can also do the same thing. You most certainly don't need a spyware protection on Linux.

I know I will be shot later for saying this, but as things stand at the moment, you can really do without using a virus scanner at all for Linux unless you're setting up a file/mail server that Windows machines will be connecting to. If this is a Linux desktop machine, you should be fine without one.

yes you can do without a virus scanner at the moment but dont as the more people who start to use linux the more viruses there will be.

IT is still a good idea to run one. IF this is for a desktop id recommend avast or avg

for a server go with clamav.

this might be a problem with yum.
