Bad downloads?
 

I am downloading different Linux iso-images from the net but almost 4 out of 5 are useless. The images are much smaller in size then they should be. Does anyone know what this problem is? For example: I’m trying to download the new PCLinuxOS-junior(484 megs) but I am constantly getting images of +/- 80, 100 or 280 megs, in other words `crap`. Downloading the minime-iso was good in one go while I had to download Mepis at least 10 times before I had the right size. Does anyone have the same problem and what can be done to improve downloading?

Which download client are you using?

Just the standard download client that xp uses.

Internet Explorer?

You should use firefox or filezilla or anything but internet explorer, which is buggy and probably corrupted by virii.

You could also try downloading via FTP or BitTorrent.

I would suggest BitTorrent. That way you can restart your download if you ever loose connection without having to start from the very beginning.

using any windows download manager will do, like dap, flash get, it can increase your download speed much.

I used dap, but it wasn’t that successful. I don’t know it might be the connecting that there is some interference. I got `whole` downloads but none of them were useful. K3b already announced that they were probably bad (and the were:)). I am gona give betTorrent a try.

Bittorrent is the way to go, it supports resuming, and because of it's distributed nature, saves the hosts from having to hold it all up on their end, much better.

A few good clients (a lot of people are incapable of googling..)

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ (Needs java, normally my client of choice)
http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/ (never used, hear good reports)
http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/ (CLI - very nice and simple)
http://www.bittorrent.com/index.html (official, don't really see the point, i have found much better clients)

There's another way to say it : if your links are FTP links, just use a real FTP client, and not IE, not Firefox, not DAP.
Now, in your case, if your connexion is of poor quality and suffers plenty of packet loss, even though FTP protocol should be able to handle it, that might explain your k3B problems, a md5 sum won't lie. Bittorrent would be a fair solution here : your downloads are segmented in small parts of something like 3-5 megabytes each, and each segment is verified regularly, so that should offer you the best chance to have good downloads in the end.
