Backup scheduling Red Hat 8
 

I am a complete and utter Red Hat 8 novice.
I have a client that has a Red Hat 8 Server which won't recognize attached usb hard drives since we changed the hardware and cloned the drive from the original everything else works but the USB.

this is not a major problem but this is how the machine does its backup.
We have been advised that the kernels cannot be upgraded and the supplier is not willing to reload a newer version onto our new HP DC 5700 (they want us to use here kit )

This is what I need the help with

From the server can I create a backup job that can back up the data to a drive mapped on a windows pc or a Nas box

If this is the case how do I


Map the drive on another machine
create the backup job
schedule the job

Your advice would be much appreciated

Red Hat Linux 8 has long since been retired and is not supported, please read the sticky entitled:

RHL8 was released before USB support was part of the kernel, as a suggestion use a supported version of Linux which has USB support. If staying with the Red Hat family try using CentOS 3 as the replacement.

The fact that some supplier insists on using this out dated and dead OS means that you need a new supplier. To answer your question in general, yes one can use the tools provided in RHL8 to backup the data to a remote drive. Since you have provided zero information about the RHL8 system your best bet is to use samba to connect to the remote system. Also use rsync to schedule and backup the data.

The reason I have not been able to supply any information is that I know very little about the system setup apart from I have changed the hardware

I believe the setup to be about 8 differnet partition and one of them is samba due to windows based machine being able to access it.

Is there a way to upgarde the system from 8 to 9 easily ??

The supplier currently is still installing Red Hat 9 is this a current version or has it been replace by Fedora

RHL9 is also outdated and no longer supported, yes Fedora is the freely available replacement for the old RHL series. As I suggested if you want long term support go with CentOS it is basically a 100% binary compatible equivalent to RHEL AS+Workstation and is freely available.
