Backup partition keeping file owners the same

I want to backup my /home partition to CD. I've tried using K3B and the built in CD burner in FC3. Both times it saved the files but it changed the owner/permissions on all of the files. One way changed the owner of all of them to the user account I was logged in with, the other way made the owner root. I'm sure there has to be a way to do this but it is eluding me. Any help? Thanks.

Generally, I tar up the files with the -p switch, which tells tar to preserve permissions. Obviously you need to be root to do this.
