Backing up The hours of Updates
 

Okay this is question #2 for me...
Okay linux "died" and i don't wanna spend the time to fix it, so i wanna re-install. Trouble is, rh9 doesn't get updates anymore. I'd like to save the updates i d/led to a cd through knoppix. My problem originally was that when i start up, i get the normal text-login that is supposed to quickly switch to x-server. But when it switches, it's all garbled, and switched back and fourth until i re-start. well, i know all my drivers are good and stuff, cause knoppix works great with auto-detect settings. with vesa driver and everything, and so did rh9. What's weird is that i just stuck in the knoppix cd and my sound randomly was detected and worked for the first time ever in knoppix or rh.
What i have already tried is re-configuring x-server, but it fails. I can't even text-based login to root with ctrl-alt-f1.
My final question is should i just migrate to fedora 2? Which already has alsa installed and 2.6 kernel?

oh yeah i need to put my system specs... i guess i'll put them in my sig so i never have to type it again!

I don't believe that there is any way to back up the updates for RH9... The installation RPMs are automatically deleted after install... there is a way to configure it to not delete them.... but if you have not done this than you are out of luck...

I started with RH9 and then tried RHEL WS... what a waste... I installed Fedora and fell in love...

Fedora Core 1 looks almost exactly like RH9 with updated packages.. And it actually runs a lot faster than Red Hat did for some reason unbeknownst to me...

I actually downloaded all the discs for Fedora Core 2 today... (as did everyone else on the planet!! LOL) but haven't installed it yet... will probably be doing that tomorrow...

My recommendation to you is to go with Fedora... whether to go with FC1 or FC2.. i don't know... 1 is definitely awesome... though I have now heard that Fedora 2 has a bug that can corrupt NTFS file allocation tables.... so if you need to dual boot, check and see if this bug is verified... it won't be a problem for me because my notebook opnly runs Fedora now...
