I'm looking to hopefully start backing up the important files on my Samba server to DVD. Problem is that I have never done any kind of optical disc writing in LINUX.
I'm running Redhat Fedora Core 2 and no GUI. So, it'd have to be done by command line and will be done by cron sometime during the early hours of the morning while I'm asleep.
I'm thinking of getting this burner
. After I install it and start up Redhat, I'm sure it will find it and possibly ask me to set it up. So, that's not such a big deal.
A few questions though. Will the above DVD burner have any conflicts with FC2? Can the script to copy the files be as simple as:
cp <files> /mnt/<opticaldrivename>
Since i don't care about incremental backups or going back a few days (just a personal file server), can I just put one rewriteable DVD in the drive and have it overwritten every night? Of course, I'll switch out the rewritable DVD's occasionally so they don't wear out. Also, once blank dual layer DVD's become available, will FC2 just be able to write 9.4GB by default rather than 4.7GB? Or will I need to make any configuration changes?
Thanks in advance.
