backing up linux to DVD
 

Hi There

I fear for my Linux server. The harddrive fall over and die again on me.

Is the anyway of backup up the drive image to a DVD-R? remotely
How would manage to do that?


-The drive HD drive is 6gigs. 2 gigs full.

-The remote machine is a Xp laptop with DVD-R (4.7gig disc's)

-The Server is purely mandrake 9.1. With 1 slow DVD reader and NO floppy.


If it is possible. I would be looking for making a bootable dvd which copys the image to the harddrive. VIA boot software on the disc.

There is norton Ghost. But I can imagine it could not do this.
Down to it might need a OS/dos to run.

Check out a program called partimage:
www.partimage.org

I think it should be able to do what you need, and even has capabilities built in to do things over a network ;)

Then, simply tar up the backups and burn em to your DVD using dvdrtools:

You could use Norton Ghost but it only supports ext2 and ext3. Norton Ghost can make an image of your partition and it can send it over the network although you need to make two floppies.

Not many DVD readers can read DVD-R or DVD-RW (there are a few dozen different DVD recording CD formats), so keep this in mind.

You may want to find a program that doesn't have to make your server be inoperationable for a while.

MasterC, Partimage looks ideal 4 what I need. Exactly what I wanted.
Including it has links to how to make Partimage boot from cd-rom.

Decided to remote backup to dvd. Then remotely restore.
Taking in to account what Electro said. I think the drive is so old. I very doubt it will be able to read DVD-R's. Well it used to have difficulties with CD-R's.
