back-up of dedicated server
 

Hello,

I am renting a dedicated server about half way around the globe. It runs on slackware linux 7.1 and has 9 gig hard drive. I manage it using webmin 0.92

As I am a bit strapped for cash, I do not have a back up contract in place. I would like to be able to back up my server, ie. create a local version on my laptop which has a 30 gig hard drive (and an external 6 gig drive as well), 256 Ram and a broadband line to the net. I currently run XP, 2000 and win98 using partition magic7.

What would be the best way to tackle this issue of a back-up. I have downloaded :

1. Everything in /etc
2. Everything in /var/named
3. Everything in /usr/local/apache/etc

as tar files, but I can't open them locally to check if everything is here. Also I feel that this is the bare min. anyway and that I could do better. In essence I would like a mirror of my server to the extent that I could either zip it up or give my spare hard disk to my current or another provider and be up and running in as long as it take to transfer the data..

My main concern is with the server configuration and set-up, the actual websites I keep local copies off at home anyway..

why can't you open the files locally? if you use zip files, you will be more compatible with windoze.

you could actually mirror the whole server (if you have the b/w) to another linux machine ... look into rsync and other tools like that.
