Back-up files on a Macintosh OS9.0 to RH 9.0 server automatically

Currently, our Mac user has a total of 1 GB of files to back-up. Is there a way to back it up to a RH 9.0 Linux server automatically on a nightly basis which would not take 2 hours? Maybe do a full back up to the RH server every week and an incremental one every day?

I would then like to get the same back-up onto a removable CD automatically. Could I write a process to burn a fully zipped back-up every week to the CD in the server?

How would I create an environment to accomplish this? The Mac is connected to the network.

We are currently running SAMBA for our Windows users and that is working pretty well. The other inexpensive option for me is to purchase an IPod and firewire the back-up but I would be very interested in solving this with a Linux solution.

I did not set-up the Linux server or Samba but am interested in learning how to do more with Linux so any help would be appreciated! :study: :)

Justauser,

I am not sure os 9 can connect to a smb share. You will probably have to use netatalk. For info see:

http://www.anders.com/projects/netatalk/

You will probably have to create a backup job on the mac as linux does not seem to be able to connect to mac shares (see the comments on afpfs on the aforementioned page). I have no idea how to backup stuff on a mac box but maybe someone else can help?
