And ... who runs the webserver (is the owner of the logs), who runs
awstats? Are they the same ID? No? There's your problem.

I doubt this. Web server is usually run by user httpd or apache, depending upon the server distribution you are using.

If you are running server on CentOS or RH, your web server is running using apcahe user account.

This is what it looks like on my CentOS5

Code:
apache 2711 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2714 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2717 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2718 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2719 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2722 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2725 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2727 0.0 0.1 12012 2872 ? S 12:07 0:00 /usr/sbin/httpd

Configure your web server for the Directory Index for example.com/awstats to be awstats.pl.
