automated mp3 organization

Hey, I've been searching around the site, and the conversations regarding this topic are over a year old. I've been using mp3s for quite some time now, but I never had the foresight to take care in filenames, tags, directories, etc. Now I pay the price with all these mp3 files, but no way of figuring out what's what, and is it repeated.

Does anybody else have this problem, if not, how did you take care of it? If I could find some software or script out there to save me from my mp3 mountain, it would be amazing. I don't want to sit down for a whole weekend to trudge through this stuff, but I'm reaching the point where that may be necessary.

I've been thinking about making a script to go through my mp3 files and read the ID3s, and then organizing the files from that information, as I am having the same problem. Of course, somewhere along the line you either have to have an orderly filename or an orderly ID3 tag, or else there is no basis for a filter.

The problem is some of them are incorrect as well. I would be willing to fix those, as long as I had something to clean up the ones with good filenames or ID3 tags.

I had a problem with 2 gb of mp3's, all in one directory. I used easytag to create the id3 tags, although it took some time. Its a really nice program. I use rhythmbox as my mp3 player and it read the tags and sorted my muxic. I can now pick by artist, genre or album. Its a great player almost like Itunes. Check out easytag and rhythmbox. It really cleaned up my collection.

http://easytag.sourceforge.net/index.htm#id3lib
or
http://id3lib.sourceforge.net/

easytag doesn't need gstcontrol or whatever.
