Auto Login
 

Hi,

I'm running Slackware 8.1 with KDE 3.0.1.

I would like to boot straight into KDE without any need for login.
I know I can set the default runlevel to 4 and go into X immediately. The problem is that when I do so, I go into the TWM window manager instead of into KDE.

When I start in runlevel 3, login normally and type "startx" then I go into KDE like it is supposed to. So I must be missing some important step. Does anyone know what I'm overlooking?

P.S. system information (dont know how relevant it might be, so better safe than sorry)

Booting remotely via PXE and root-NFS (its a ThinClient, no HDD or floppy or CDROM)

I think you mean runlevel 5, not 4... I think 4 is reserved (and currently unused).

Try and have a look in the following files in your home directory:

.xinitrc
.Xsession

and maybe some other ones starting with a '.[xX]' (a hidden file with a lower or uppercase X). Maybe something will come up...? (Sorry I can't be more specific :/ ).

I think the runlevels under slackware differ a bit from other distro's: <quoting /etc/inittab>

# These are the default runlevels in Slackware:
# 0 = halt
# 1 = single user mode
# 2 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)
# 3 = multiuser mode (default Slackware runlevel)
# 4 = X11 with KDM/GDM/XDM (session managers)
# 5 = unused (but configured the same as runlevel 3)

I will try booting into runlevel 3, with the command "/opt/kde/bin/kwm" in /etc/rc.d/rc.local tonight to see if that works.

Hmm..I'm still getting the login screen + the option to select my window manager. When I choose KDE (or TWE for that matter) the screen flickers briefly and returns promptly to the login screen. Only when I choose failsafe I get an x console without any further window manager whatsoever.
