auto launch programs at login

Hello everyone. I have been working on this linux for a few months now. My new job has me using a laptop with Fedora 3 and I have Fedora 4 at home which I try to mess with. Its quite a transition as many know. So far I am having better luck getting things to work on Solaris and AIX than I am with trying to figure things out at the simple user level with Linux. In Windows we had the Startup, as many know, and you can have applications automatically launch when you login. Now there are some things I would like to have automatically launched when I sign in on my Fedora 3 box. Ok heres the kicker, or at least a limitation for me. I dont have root. Used to and boy do I miss it. New policy dictated that it must go. But back to the main point. I would like to know how I could get some apps to launch when i sign in. I have performed tremendous google searches and cant get anything. I tried messing with my .bash_profile, but that did nothing, so i put it back to its original settings.

Well, thanks for any help.

desmondtm,

Using Fedora, I assume that your booting directly into the GUI. Having applications start when you log-into the GUI all depends on which GUI you are using (KDE, Gnome etc...)

I have only ever used KDE, so hopefully someone else can offer some more advice for the others. You can place anything you want started when you boot KDE into ~/.kde/Autostart

If you could provide more details on how you are logging in, and what you need started at boot, I may be able to provide you with a more detailed response.

Regards,
Kristijan
