Authentication for linux

I am some what new to linux. But I need to know if the the following is posible.

I have a network that is Winnt right everhting is working great , I want to get rid of the whole DOMAIN thing, I want to setup just user authentication, I allready have a network storage system (whcih my other linux boxes can see) so the new machine which i will install linux( red hat EP) does not need any sharing to windows systems( clients) I just need auth... So iam guessing I dont need Samba? do I need to purshace a thrid party linux app to do this? and if posible is there a way to move all client from nt to the new linux box..If all is so how would the windows client machine logon in if there's no DOMAIN..

ANy help would be great. Thanks to all

You can auth against, ldap, samba, NIS, kerbeos and a few others I'm fairly certain.

If you don't need to worry about windows... then that will save you half the headache.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LDAP-Imple...TO/pamnss.html

This is a guide to authentication against ldap.

Personally, I have a mixed network so I have a Samba3 PDC with LDAP backend. It's a bit of a learning curve.

You might want to also pick up an ldap browser. (I'm using ldapadmin from sourceforge... but it won't do you much good until your openldap implementation is finished).

Thanks for your reply, but the thing is all my clients are going to be window machines. Will the link you sent me still work. Iam sorry if I sound like a broken record, and will setting permissions on folders and files going to show the same way windows auth did( meaning when I set auth on the network storage system,( IP4700)..Thanks again for all your input
