aumix: different behaviour when invoked remotely via an ssh session
 

I need to remotely control the volume on an Ubuntu machine. Unfortunately, when I try to invoke aumix via an ssh login, this is what I get:

$ aumix
aumix: error opening mixer: Success


The same command runs perfectly on the machine's console.

Why the difference ?
