Audio streaming

Hi everybody (again!),

A number of sites I have come across (mainly radio sites), allow their streams to be played through the internet. Some, like BBC Radio 1, allow me to choose real player and work fine, but lots of others only seem to want a windows media player plug-in... which doesn't seem to work on linux.

One site I would like to listen to is capital FM: http://www.capitalfm.com/

Is there any way around this problem?

Thanks in advance,

matt.

This site seems to require Mplayer11 for windoze. I could not find any plugin for firefox and linux. My guess is you are out of luck on linux. There are tons of sites that do work in linux. Look here :http://www.shoutcast.com/ or here : http://www.live365.com/index.live for lots of choice. I have used XMMS and BMP to play these streams.

thanks camorri,

You're right 365 does have some good stuff on it, cheers.

I presume there is no way to somehow fake media player 11 working though? I know there is wine, but download requires service pack 2 for windows and all that crap lol...

Would there be anyway of somehow finding the url, and then copying it into another player, like Real?

Cheers,

matt.

I just clicked on the link and got access to the site. Played a commercial or two then played some music--seems to work fine with my debian box. I have the mozilla-totem plugin with w32 codecs ,flash enabled too.(using iceweasel)

glidermike,

cool cool, erm, how do I go about installing this mozilla-totem thing whatever that is?

I am using suse 10.2.

cheers.

You will have to reconfigure your yast sources ( add a few lines) The easy way is to follow a guide like this one :

http://www.softwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/60/

About half way down the page are the instructions for dvdcss (play dvd) and w32 codecs (windows media)If you follow the guides you can get a very nice multimedia capable operating system with suse, just do all the steps in the guide.
