Unhappy Audio programs use many resources

I use archlinux 0.7 with kernel 2.6.11.10. My computer:Celeron 500᧴@563, 192mb ram, Creative pci 128 (Ensoniq1371) sb. I have configured alsa. But audio programs eg. Xmms use about 20-30% cpuഅ! In knoppix it usees only 1%. What I should to do?

Interesting. Please onserver your system when it plays for example system songs, cd to the audo output and so on. Does it also take so much processing power?
