Unhappy Audio not working..no output while playing

Hi..

I have installed mandriva linux 2009 and my audio is not working at all..n when i play video also, the video part comes without audio..songs play, but no output..i have n intel 945 motherboard, n in windows i had intsalled realtek audio drivers so i guess,it must b d same for linux..my speakers are creative SBS 2.1(370)..

I'm totally new to linux so i dnt know how to check things through console..i went through many forums n one common solution i found was to update the kernel which i did through update manager...my present kernel version is 2.6.27.10-desktop-1mnb..but this didnt solve my problem..please help..

You have several options ----
1) Change the distribution
2) try udev , type man udev in terminal , it prints some useful informations
3) use OSS audio driver !!! or other !!

At the task bar is a loudspeaker icon , if you put mouse pointer over there what does it says about the volume ?
IF you got menu pulse audio control can you change the output ?
Last if both things do not work ask for a terminal type the command lspci
and see what it says about youŕe audio card and forget the rest of the information

try to install alsa drivers
then run alsamixer in a terminal

also, in your window manager go to
system=>preferences=>sound
disable or enable esd

Thanx for the replies ronlau9 & repo but the problem doesnt seem to be solved

When i put the mouse over, it says master:100% . I checked the volume control, nothngz muted. i downloaded realtek drivers for linux which had alsa inside it. I tried installing but it gave an error message

"Checking for snd_ctl_open in -lasound...no
configure:error:no linkable libasound was found."

And how do i run alsamixer in terminal? n again, if u'l excuse my lack of knowledge, what's esd? I couldn't find an option of enabling/disabling esd in system=>preferences=>sound...

What should i do? Thanx again for replying...

Can't you install alsa using the packet manager of your distribution?
if alsa is installed, type
Code:
alsamixer
