Audio from inbuilt monitor speakers does not mute on plugging in headphones

Audio from inbuilt monitor speakers does not mute on plugging in headphones
The speakers in my monitor do not mute when i plug in my headphones. this is quite disturbing as im not able to listen to songs without disturbing others. Im running ubuntu 8.04 alongside vista(the headphone switch works perfectly in vista) on a HP desktop. im not sure what info i have to provide....so plz tell me if ill have to post any other info. thanks for all those who read this.

Normally when you plug in a headphone the speakers are turn off by a switch
