Audio Cd

I cant play any audios cd in my gentoo. Kscd returns the following message:

CD-ROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive).
Please make sure you have access permissions to:
/dev/cdrom

Can anyone help me??
I have no problem mounting data cds, and i dont believe that the problem is related to permissions.

Thanks in advance. Guilherme.

Hi.

What do you get from:
Code:
ls -l /dev/cdrom

Is /dev/hdc your CD drive? Try 'eject /dev/hdc' and see if you can get the tray to eject.

Yes I can. I logged as root in the machine now, and kscd was able to play the cd. It may be a permission problem.... but i guess the permissions are right.... what can it be...?? =(

As you'll hear many times, do not log in as root

The basic problem is group membership; you need to create a group called "cdrom" and join it. You need to edit the /etc/groups file, where the membership of each user is listed. Beyond that the permissions are set properly for the device.

I only logged as root to test if the problem could be related to permissions. I tried sudo chmod -R 777 in /dev/cdrom, and then I was capable of executing audio cds, but, when the computer is rebooted it seems that the alteration I made is not recorded by the system, and every time I reboot the computer I have to type the command again to be able to execute audio cds.... Can anyone think of a permanent solution?

In Fedora, there's a file at /etc/security/console.perms which decides the permissions for certain devices (including disks).

I don't know if this file exists in Gentoo, though.

There is a file named console.apps, in /etc/security but there's nothing about cdrom drives nor permissions in the file...
