audio across network

Hi, i recently rebuilt my old laptop to use as a media player but then realised that my 5.1 surround sound (that requires 3 analog inputs or one digital) won't work with the laptop as it has only the standard headphone and mic output. Currently my newer laptop is hooked up to the speakers using a digital cable. My music is on an external hard drive that stays plugged into the the older laptop. My speakers are the logitech z5500s. Is there anyway to connect both laptop to the speakers with the older one losing any quality (i use flac) or can i play the audio across an ethernet plug between the two laptops. I don't want to have to operate anything from the newer laptop as i don't want it to hog any resources. older laptop is running ubuntu newer one is running vista

Unless I am missing the point here, it sounds like all you have to do is share out the music on the external drive over Samba, and play it with whatever media player you want on the Vista laptop.

The Ubuntu documentation covers setting up a basic Samba server, which should get you in the right direction.
