attempt at gentoo

well.. i've checked a lot of forums on this problem and not one has really helped me. I tried asking at the gentoo forums and still really no help at all.

my problem is trying to gentoo to install. i've downloading the x86 livecd and the i686 cds just to try it out. everytime when the cds boot up, i'll get to the screen where it says "type gentoo.. blah.. blah.. blah". so i do that. then it'll get to where everything is detecting, but after it's done detecting the soundcard and stuff, this same error keeps scrolling :

Code:

cloop: error -5 uncompressing block 352 65536/65536/28645/0 788950/7918146
end request: I/O, dev f0:00 (cloop), sector 45182
INIT: ld "c1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

i can't seem to get past that. also the box that i'm trying to install it on is an AMD k6/2-400mhz 64mb . i'd be appreciated if someone could help me out, thanks.

Did you read this thread? Sounds like it could be a bad CD-ROM (or CD image - did you check the md5 sum?) or even the CD-ROM.

just read it now. the md5sum checked out okay for both for them. could it be a bad cd? oh also, i've installed debian and slack on the box a while back too. so i don't think it could be the drive itself.

I've got 2 sets of pentium 4 gentoo disc's in front of me. The md5sums have always checked ok.

and it doesn't matter whether I get the install done with my cdrw or dvd drive - I don't get the same error all the time, but I've never managed to do an install as per the install guide - the disc's seem to do strange things in strange places.

my first disc 1 worked ok, but I couldn't get any packages off the 2nd one and on the second set, it spat out some erratic/inconsistent errors with disc one, so I didn't bother to try disc 2 I just finished off by using disc 1 of the first pair, then doing emerge kde - and sat back for a 15 hour download/compile/merge

sorry, I appreciate that I'm not much help, but I thought i'd post so you know that you're not alone in getting weird responses from gentoo disc's

regards

John
