ATI x800 XT PE 3D Accel woes

So the huge hastle that ATI has created from not fully supporting their drivers did not prevent me from installing them properly on my SuSE 9.3 Pro distribution. Problem is, I can't get 3d acceleration working. I'm running an intel p4 32 bit, 512 meg of ram, with the ATI Radeon x800 XT Platinum Edition GFX card and everything is running smooth except for the fact that I can't activate 3d acceleration.

I am fairly noob, and don't want to dabble in recompiling my kernel as I would make everything fubar. Please, if someone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

I know nvidia have a great linux driver for thier cards, and i do remember reading that ATI have also released a driver for theres. The nvidia drivers are on there website, so perhaps check on the ATI website? Sorry that i cant be any more help here, im at school so cant chase up any links for you (20mb/month limit :'()

In my opinion the nvidia cards are better on linux, because they seem to have better openGL support (there is no dX under linux ).

In case you didnt know, use glxgears to test your fps, it should be in the thousands... My geforce fx 5700 LE sits on around 3000fps from memory...

Hey guys, thanks. I was able to find the drivers, but I still can't configure openGL / 3d acceleration on the card. Maybe someone could point me in the direction of a faq or tutorial?
