ATI Radeon on FC5 Livna

I have used livna for my FC5 installation sitting on a Toshiba Satellite. I have changed the Driver to "ati" instead of "fglrx" as suggested. When I run startx it dispays a lot of pixels and text and graphics are unrecognizable. What will I do so that I can run X in my laptop? Please help me... I have finished installing livna thru yum and everything is OK.

Need more info?
Has it worked before?
What video card model is in it?
If ATI Radeon I think maybe to should be ' radeon ' instead of ' ati '.

My video card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. It worked before when I used ubuntu using "vesa" and the other tweak (i forgot). But I am now using FC5 but can't work it out. Maybe I will try to use your suggestion for using "radeon" instead of "ati" in the driver.

Thanks...

Hi,

Please help out a newbie: How do you change the driver?

Lavie

Brian1 05-07-2006 09:39 AM

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as root. Goto the section on video card and change the driver there. Restart X.

NOTE: make a copy of existing xorg.conf before modifing so if you make a mistake you can restore it.

I know I am a noob but this problem is bothering me. I am almost positive I installed the ati drivers right through yum and the Fedorafaq. But now when i go to resolutions, all i have is 800x600 and the one below that. Why did it take away my high res? :(

Post contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf before and after.

Change this section from
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

to

SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0

Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

Restart X

See if this works. If youa can do 1280x1024 then use that but try the above first.

Ty Brian, that worked perfect!!!!

valQ 05-09-2006 01:33 AM

I followed your step and it was still not OK. I can see that livna driver is loaded [OK] during the boot process. Also, I have changed the Driver "fglrx" to "ati" and "radeon" both did not work for me. When I pressed CTRL+BACKSPACE it wasn't able to go back to text mode. Any suggestion?
