ATI Radeon 9800 drivers improperly installed

Hi,

I know I made this harder for myself by trying to fix the problem once, failing, then giving up and forgetting what I'd done. But I'd like to get everything working right this time and would appreciate someone's help.

I know my AGP graphics card (ATI Radeon 9800) is not installed properly because fglrxinfo returns

Code:
john@johndesk:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.1)
Which appears to be a software driver instead of hardware. I also have tried to install from the ATI website, I believe, because I have the ATI Catalyst Control Center in my "Applications" menu, though it doesn't do anything when I try to run it. Additionally, lsmod | grep agp returns

Code:
intel_agp 22140 1
agpgart 29896 1 intel_agp
I decided to grep agp because it's attached to the agp port, but maybe that's not right, so I can tell you whatever other output of lsmod you may want to see.

Finally, I've seen other threads mention the glxgears or glxinfo commands, neither of which bash recognizes. Thanks in advance for any help!

To use these commands in Debian you need to install the mesa-utils package.
Regards.
