ATI Radeon 9600XT

I just bought a brand new $200 Video card, and linux doesn't know what it is... I went to ATI's website and downloaded the driver specificly for this card There is a problem installing the drivers, it sais its conflicting with something. I tried to force install it and broke my linux installation and was forced to reload...

Help??

Try to post more information, not just a vague description of what happens.
Also, ATI support under Linux is poor.

I had the same problem. When booting on the Mandrake distro, there is no Radeon standard driver.
I choose vesa, it works, but the KDE screen is significantly smaller than the physical display.
Does somebody know how to find and install the drivers for a RADEON 9600 graphical adapter under Linux ?

Unless you plan to use it mostly under windows, my first recommendation would be to return the card and pick up an equivalent Nvidia model (FX 5900XT). Frankly, Nvidia's linux drivers are so much better than ATI's that it's not funny.

And I own a Radeon 9600XT myself, and use it under linux. Believe me, you could do without my trouble.

However, if you're stuck with the radeon, I'd suggest a trip over to the linux forum at rage3d.com, where there are some excellent tutorials on making linux and ati play ball nicely.
