ATI Radeon 9000 ???
 

Hey all! I finalized the installation of Mandrake, and upon rebooting & loading my GUI, it gave me an error saying it could not display the screen. I ran setup again, and the installation program selected "ATI RADEON" as the default graphics adapter.... but it still won't work!!! All I can use is the command line, and I'm screwed! Please help!

Odd. I have the same distro AND the same vid card. Never gave me any prbs. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you, but at least your post gets a -bump- ;)

ATI Radeon 9000 series are NOT identified in the initial setup screen, and I can only choose generic ATI Radeon drivers - needless to say, it says that "screens are detected, but has an unusable configuration" and throws me into the friggin' prompt (WHICH I am a totally ignorant newbie!) and I have no clue what to do!!!

Do I need to preload a driver? Maybe because my card has 2 outputs?

i have ati radeon 9600 myself, and i can't choose that from the list, because it's not there. so i use generic vga, and i get my 1024 X 768 desktop w/ 24-bit colors and the 3-d apps that i have running work just fine.

dunno about specifics (newbie myself), but there seems to be a case for using generics, if you don't have manufacturer's drivers.

reinstall with the generic drivers, then save your "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" file to your home directory then download the ati radeon drivers from http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html . after that press "ctrl+alt+f1" then login as root and type "kill mdkkdm" then run the installer that you downloaded. then type "startx" if X still does not start compare the old xf86config-4 with the new and look for differences in vertical sync and horizontal sync and refresh rates. hope this helps :-)

could you also tell me why my isdnmodules fail to start at boot (how do i start manually, i'm only so far in the manuals) after i got my asus pci isdnlink card set up with correct i/o address and interrupt.

first network config gave me the wrong i/o address w/o a possibility to change it (as opposed to that reported by the system) and i couldn't activate it, the card appeared busy to the system; so i removed any software references i could find to the card, and after reboot set it up as new hardware. now i got the correct i/o address (and i can change it, if i want). and now the isdnmodules fail at boot.

do i have to go to asus to download their isdnlink drivers? question really is, how do i set up the drivers (haven't yet found a good explanation inthe manuals)?

if you could give a good pointer (even to the right manual to begin with, there's so damn many of them and abt half of every new manual is already old hat to me by now and they just tell to pick your card from the list and so forth), you'd be right up there with Linus in my world.

(I'm running red hat 9.0 with 2.4.20 kernel)
