Hi Rich,
You left out the important bit: which ATI card do you have? and what ATI packages have you installed?
cheers,
jdk

Hi Rich,
If you want 3D acceleration you'll probably want the fglrx driver. The packages may be available in the Ubuntu repos or you might have to download them from ATI and build them yourself. If you are running the 2.6.30 kernel then the packages should be ok for you.
Cheers,
jdk

ati graphics card

the accelerator drivers are there in package manager but if i install them with the drivers i already have installed is this going to cause the same problem i started with i mean the screen going black after reboot becouse this causes a real headache having to reinstall ubuntu to get thing running again!
