ATI 7000 does not display GUI with XFree86 4.3.0

I have an ATI Radeon 7000 32 MB RAM [PCI] that when I boot my computer and type "startx" will not display the GUI [Gnome]. At installation the card is recognized. I am using Redhat 9.0. I have tried running XFree86 -configure but when I test that configuration all I get is a cursor "X" in the middle of the screen and it will not move. The monitor goes in to sleep mode before the cursor appears. Everything that I can find says that XFree86 4.3.0 supports the Radeon 7000 rv100. Thanks in advance for any help. Sincerely --:newbie:
