I can not speak intelligently about linux compatibility on an Athlon 64 system but I can tell you from my experience I do not know of any distros more Newbie friendly than Mandrake (available via .ISO)

If you truly need this to take full advantage of your Athlon 64 you might want to try the hardware forum.

SuSE 9.1 Pro edition comes with a Athlon64 version on DVD.

Mandrake 10 may have a AMD64 version, but I've only seen
10.1 Beta 2 on the web. There are AMD64 (x86_64) updates for 10, but I don't think
Mandrake has released 10 AMD64 Official on the web yet.

SuSE of course - as of few days ago newest SuSE 9.2 Pro is available for download - try googleing for more info on download locations.

Fedora Core 3 is due out on the 9th of November, and comes with an AMD64 version.

There's the AMD64 version of the current FC2, but with FC3 coming so soon, it'd be silly to recommend it.
