Boot ISO? need help.

Ok as a Newbie I have no idea on how to burn a cd from ISO images.

I have wasted 9 cd's so far for nothing.

I downloaded the ISO images and extracted the Contents from a rar file that appeared under win XP.

It didn't work and the boot disk would not see it as a Linux CD.

I tried making an ISO disk from the Image and once again (0).

I tried making a UDF from the ISO and again NADA.

So what it the Magic secret to creating a Boot CD using ISO images that appear as RAR files

I have WIN XP/ and NERO 6 With a DVD R/RW.

I can Operate win just dandy but is it that Linux will not Boot from a plain old CD ( correctly formatted or not) and a Floppy?

Can Anyone help? There is no documentation Anywhere on how to do this correctly.

Don't extract the files using winrar, open up nero, close the wizard and click on recorder at the top, click burn image and choose the .iso file as the image to burn. Should work then.

Cheers

That works a treat but CD will not boot the PC I still have to use a floppy.

In any case I got the system loaded and immediately got lost.

I try to shutdown and it asks me to login again>???? The bigger problem is the system will not accept my password (It does not even type)?

The only way I can shutdown is by resetting the PC.

OMG what have I created........?

The first thing I would do is not have WinRar associate itself with ISO files. This way you'll be presented with a single file that you can just burn as an image with Nero.

Boot CD ISO too big

Boot CD ISO is too big to burn as an iso am I doing this right?

I have tried to burn in other ways (folder view etc) and it fits but installer will not recognize them.

I opened the RAR file and Burned the contents as burning strait does not fit the CD. I just assumed I was doing something wrong trying to burn the ISO image.

Image 1 works fine (but will not auto run so a boot floppy is required) but iso.2 and 3 are too big.

I am using Nero under WIN XP.

Hmm The attributes persist. I never initiated the association but RAR does it anyway?

I even have ISO buster installed but no deal.

I managed to load of the first CD using a boot disk (would not auto run) but i cannot load the other images in same manner as the file goes too big? I started another thread to help out anyone else who (no doubt) will run into the same issues.

Edit: removed link to second part of problem.

You don't have to manually extract files. You just need to load the .iso file with Nero (look for a menu called something like Burn image).

The boot part is embedded in the iso file it self.
That makes, to burn a bootable cd the iso file will have to include the boot image.
Probably there are burn software that could merge in a boot image to a pre existing iso file at burn time. Haven't tried my self.

You seem to be trying to burn the cd by telling nero to burn it as a data cd. An iso is infact the contents of the cd itself. What you should be doing is to burn it as an image, as vodka said.

EDIT: typos

You have 2 threads open which are the same. Since both have answers they are being merged, but in future, please do not double post.

are you sure they are too big. i have burned .iso images as large as 825 MB onto a 700 MB cd-r. compression takes place during the 'burn as image' process in nero.
