Which browser are you using?

If you are using Firefox or Iceweasel (Debian's firefox) click Edit > Preferences the menu that comes up press the Main tab, there is a section for Downloads. You can pick "Save files to" or "Always ask me where to save files" then close the window. The next time you download a file it will either go to the directory you specified or will ask you where to put it.

my browser is seamonkey. The options for downloads are slightly different from Firefox but enable posting to a specified file which suits me. pity it does not have the always ask option. Stupid me should have looked properly at preferences THANKS !!!!!!!
