arts problem -- (no sounds)
At one point my sound was working just fine in KDE (so I know this isn't a hardware problem), but then I decided to give gnome a try. I couldn't get sound to work on gnome so I tried installing a new version of xmms and its plugins. I couldn't get it to work so I tried to undo everything that I did and then went back to KDE.
Now my sound won't work. In fact, xmms will hang unresponsively when I play anything. My web browsers with flash plugins (mozilla_1.1 and netscape_x.x) also hang at certain websites--I think this is because they are trying to play sounds. I can, however, play audio CDs -- I think this is because they don't go through the software, right? When I turned up the verbosity of arts to "informative," I get the following two messages at startup: Code:
file format extension kde/share/sounds/ unsupported Code:
Can't set real-time scheduling priority. |
Well. No one was really interested in this, but I was able to figure out my problem, anyway. So for all that searched the archives to find their problem and found this:
I had forgotten that I had done a couple of updates. I ended up updating kde for a new kernel (I think), but I didn't use the new kernel because I didn't have a compatible wireless driver for it. When I got that and used the newer kernel, sound worked just fine. I almost didn't notice at first! Those arts warning messages still showed up, so they were actually red herrings. PS I've now switched to gnome (If only I could get galeon to work.....:-) |
Hey, for gnome try garnome. I was playing with a galeon beta today and it's getting very slick - note GNOME2 is soooo much better than 1.4 it's not even funny.
You can ignore the arts warnings if you have a decent machine. |
Hmmmm. I'm a little scared of trying to start GNOME2. Especially after I have almost everything working satisfactorily.
My problems with Galeon seem to be related to my installation of Mozilla. Since I downloaded binaries but not rpms, Galeon complained when I tried to install its rpms that I didn't have a current enough version of mozilla -- even though I have 1.2.1 working, which should work with Galeon 1.2.7, right? I was able to work around it by telling Gnome to use Mozilla just about all the time. I realize that this is overkill, but it was all I could do for now. |
