Are these CDs the same???
 

Ok, I ordered Mandrake 9.1 from www.cheapbytes.com and the install CD#1 is labeled as Mandrake Linux 9.1.


My friend (who I talked into ordering Mandrake 9.1), he ordered it from the LinuxCentral website. And the installation CD is labeled as (Mandrake version 9.1 X86).

My friend is wondering if its the same thing as my set of CDs????

Does the (X86) mean any difference on what I have???

Both cheap and central just sell you labeled
downloadable iso's (to the best of my knowledge),
so they may well look different or be labeled differently.

To be sure you have the same you could rip an
iso of the CD, and then md5sum it and compare that
with his results.

Btw, why in the world MDK 9.1 when there was 9.2
or 10 available? :)

Honest answer??

Because the MDK 10 has 6 CDs instead of 3. I do not need all those extra packages. I only use it for Internet, and only for basic use. Thats it.

I only will use OpenOffice and Internet. Only the basic stuff. Im pretty happy with 9.1. It fits my needs. But,, maybe I will upgrade down the road.

9.2 would have had 3 CD's as well ... I'm sorry,
just very biased towards that particular release.

Saw nothing but trouble with several of my mates
who run MDK ... they all were much happier with 9.2.

is there a huge difference between 9.1 9.2 and 10?

I cant find it on the Mandrake Store. Is this it??? Im looking for MDK 9.2

Ok, I willl order Mandrake 10.0. for my computer thats being built in Europe. For now, I will use 9.1.


But one question, does Mandrake 10 include the KPPP Dialer????

then went 10.0 and havent had a single complaint since.

I have a questions regarding mandrake 10. I will be downloading the isos from www.linuxiso.org and they only have three cds to download. Unixfreak mentioned that mandrake 10 has 6cds, why the difference. Also, would i be able to install the isos in an AMD box. (AMD 900MHZ). Im little confused with i386 and i586 architecture. Can someone explain the difference? thanks in advance

Nothing. x86 is just an abbreviation for Intel CPUs. If it was labeled PPC, SPARC or Alpha then I might consider contacting where ever you ordered the CDs from.

No problems with an AMD CPU. There is lots of info on the web on Intel architecture but in a nutshell:
i286 - 80286 CPU
i386 - 80386
i486 - 80486
i586 - Pentium
i686 - Pemtium w/ mmx
Intel's CPU instruction set is downward compatable i.e. what is compilied for a i386 will work for 486, 586 etc. but a kernel compiled for a i586 will not work on a 80486 CPU. MDK's default kernel is compiled for a i586 but you could recompile to optimize it for the AMD

So just to confirm, Mandrake 9.1 on the other CDs that I have and Mandrake 9.1 (x86) what my friend has is the same thing, right???

man how many times people must tell you YES!! its the same motherfu****** thing, your cds and your friend's cds is the same thing WHY? because thats the life, your cds arent labeled with x86
