What I am looking for is an exe like "wubi.exe", circa 2001

You're off by a few years. The first release of Ubuntu was in October, 2004. I believe wubi was
first available in April, 2007.

In the past, you could go to the Ubuntu site and download and run wubi.exe which is just a script.
It in turn will download and install the "current" Ubuntu and install it inside windows as a program.
Details on this process are at the wubi site at the link below. To find this site, I opened my web
browser and typed "wubi" in the search box. First hit. Have you read this before?

The problem you are having with wubi is that it is no longer being developed and is not supported
by Canonical/Ubuntu which means if you want to use it, you are on your own and either need to figure
it out on your own or with help from others. Wubi is not available in the Ubuntu repositories any
longer and you will have to get it from third party sites. You need versions of it for 12.04, 14.04
or 16.04 as they are the only versions supported so those are the only versions which have repositories
available.

The attempt you posted above in post 8 indicates that whatever site you got the wubi.exe from was
specifically for release 9.04 which hasn't been supported for years and therefore it's repositories
where all the files you need are not there anymore. You can see that in the messages: HTTP Error
404: Not Found. That site was last updated in Aprl, 2013.

I believe the last version which had support for wubi is 12.04 which is still available and supported.
You need to get wubi for the version you want to install because it looks at a specific location in
specific repositories.

The process is the same for Linux and windows in that you download the iso file, you then use software
to "burn as an image" to a DVD OR you use software to put it on a flash drive. When that is finished,
you put the DVD in the drive or plug in the flash drive and reboot your computer ensuring that the
DVD device or flash drive is set to first boot priority. If you have rufus, you should have the
downloaded iso file on your hard drive and open rufus and follow whatever prompts to create a bootable
usb drive. Never used rufus myself so don't know the process.

The files and folders you indicate you see in post 18 are what one would expect to see on a Lubuntu
which has been copied to a DVD or flash drive properly and if those files are on the DVD when you
access it in either Puppy or xp, it should be good to boot from. If you can't change the boot
priority to boot from the DVD or usb, you can't install from it obviously.

You might take a look at the link below which is a tutorial on installing and dual-booting Ubuntu
14.04. Lubuntu uses the same installer so it will be the same except for the background color.

The bad news, kiddies, is that the gist of it all is this:
If it is even possible to find a one-click downloader/installer for Linux that actually works on the first try,
the search is more exhausting and frustrating than just going with the current circuitous convoluted approach.
Abandon sanity; download an ISO, download the ISO-transmogrifiers, download the transmogrified-ISO-installers, just
download and do everything they tell you to until you find a compilation of programs and processes that work on
your machine. Have faith, work long and hard (or have a few extraordinary strokes of luck), and Linux will come to
you.
This is the way of the modern world. Deal with it.

I see that you marked the topic as solved so I am writing my post just for your information.

If you need a good source for Wubi info, see askubuntu. If you read at askubuntu "and Wubi.exe was no longer shipped from release 15.04." and compare it with
maybe, you are a little bit confused. In fact, Wubi wasn't thrown off of the default Ubuntu 13.04 disc image but nobody checked it before writing about it ...... even the writer of the official release notes didn't check it. If you follow the link provided in the ReleaseNotes you also find the reason why Wubi was not dropped for 13.04. The bugs were fixed by bcbc and the version for 13.04 was released by a maintainer. see here.

But it was in 2013.

In 2015 a maintainer dropped Wubi from the disc image. But IMHO it was only a strategic decision. All major bugs were fixed by hakuna_matata and the fixes were ready to release.

Maybe the missing Wubi should increase the demand for a new cooperation with Microsoft. "Ubuntu on Windows 10" was launched few months later.

As I wrote, if someone want to install Ubuntu with Wubi the new community supported versions from hakuna-m aka hakuna_matata are great.

IMHO, the support is also better than official Canonical support. If you have Wubi problems you can create a new issue at github repository. But my attempts were successful. No need for issues.

Did you spend all night on that, or are you one of these Linux gods/goddesses that seem to be popping up ever since I gave up on getting a courteous, relevant response to the issue? If the latter, which I want to believe, then no doubt, like a few others who have blown my mind here, it probably took you less than a minute to spew out half that data and information, and perhaps thirty seconds to type it and tie in the relevant links... you guys/gals are blowing me away, did the dumbing-down of Amerika just completely pass you by while you were competing with the Asian students? This is actually to my Magnificent Six, a half-dozen responders to this thread that awed me with their manners, knowledge, and communications skills..... hi guys (and gal), I am still blown away by you six.

Never having used wubi before and curious about this, I went to the Ubuntu site at the link below for release 12.04 as that is the last version I was aware of fully supporting wubi. At the bottom of the page, you will see 6 different wubi files. Tried a couple that failed, couldn't find the image file message. The one that worked was "wubi-12.04.1" which I downloaded and ran and it successfully installed Ubuntu on the windows partition. Total time for the entire process including downloading wubi was less than 30 minutes.

If you use wubi, I would suggest using the older 12.04 as it is a little lighter. The 14.04 has a wubi.exe but 16.04 does not and those are the only two versions besides 12.04 currently supported.

I'm not sure the process will be that simple for Lubuntu but apparently you can use it also.

I have been interested in Wubi for some years. One day, I found the Wubi blog of bcbc. Since then, it has never been a problem to collect information about Wubi.

I tested it, Lubuntu 12.04 didn't work that simple. An error message occured if Wubi tried to download Lubuntu:

The link below has what is claimed to be a solution to the problem. You would have to be pretty serious about using wubi to go through that entire process. It is specifically for Ubuntu but supposedly would work with other Ubuntu's.

I have a Lubuntu 14.04 iso and I loop mounted it and copied the wubi.exe file from it to a folder on windows and then copied the lubuntu iso to the same directory and ran wubi.exe and got the same error: global name 'sig' is not defined

I would have expected it to work since it is the wubi.exe from that specific release. This is the first time I've used wubi and I don't expect I'll try it again.

The Magnificent Six are a credit to their calling, and stellar examples of why LQ exists and how it should operate! Imho.
I'm sure they are not the only intelligent, incredibly well-informed, courteous, helpful members with the remarkable ability to communicate in English to be found here on LQ, they are just the first-responders that saved me personally from cutting my own head off and stuffing it into a bowling bag. P.S........ the reason I got so excited over those last 3 posts is that it dramatically underscores exactly the situation I encountered recently trying to return to Linux, making me so angry and frustrated that I actually opened a blog here -- "LINUX 001" -- despite my aversion to that particular online activity. Eventually LINUX 001 will be a short, small blog that shows a newbie/refugee/returnee how to actually get the right distro and version of Linux onboard their machine, without having to go through what I and countless others, no doubt, have gone through since this simple process became a convoluted time-consuming nightmare.

Yes, it sped up after a reboot... still a bit sluggish, but then, so am I. Worth the switch, though! (ladies ;-] )
Not-so-good: Firefox GUI a bit different, can't locate some controls, like the Add-Ons Manager toolbar button or hamburger.
A LOT of add-ons from the desktop Ubuntu Software Center are "not compatible with your version of FireFox"...
and i mean apparently the majority. Could be an issue for some folks.
Bad: Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, nothing bad. Yet. Except the sluggishness, which isn't bad, just noticeable. Still gleeful.
Overall, still much better than being a victim of Winblows.

(collecting myself and suppressing my glee.... there are more dragons to slay............)
Okay..... moving on.
Before I reboot, to see if my freshly-installed-by-wubi Ubuntu will speed up some, I will pose the next question:

Will it help to pare down and/or eliminate some Winblows components on my old partition?

Like many others, I'm sure, I have certain old Winblows programs and games that I don't want to trash. Some of them will run under WINE or a Winblows emulator, some won't.... do I have to keep, at the very least, the Winblows kernel to continue enjoying those progs/apps?
