Are KDE and Gnome necessary WMs?
Hello,
I got Gnome installed, but I never used it. I used KDE till now, because it helped me to get accustomed with Linux. Now I use only Fluxbox, and never KDE or Gnome. Do I need these WMs installed? Can I safely remove them from my system? Thanx |
No they're not necessary, yes you can safely remove them from your system, as long as you're able to take care of dependency problems.

Oh, thanks for such a quick response.
Maybe, I better live them on the disk. At the moment I can't take care of dependencies. |
You really don't need GNOME or KDE. Their libraries though may be useful to run some programs. If you are using an rpm based distro, when you attempt to remove a program with
Code:
rpm -e program_name |
I don't want to hijack the thread but I use Gnome and not KDE, so how can I uninstall KDE, while still being able to use programs like k3b that use the qt library? Keep in mind i'm on slack so no rpms...

use pkg manager
in KDE go to start->system->kpackage (in slack, but should be same in all) and remove what you dont want. Its very simple, just make sure you have the root password handy. GNOME also has the package manager feature so go into GNOME and del KDE if you want GNOME (and vice versa).
