ArchLinux is optimized for i686...


...does that mean that if you install it on a Pentium machine, then you are likely to have problems or sub-optimal performance ?

sub optimal I would think, but it might not work, try vector for old machines
pentium 3 and 4 are both i686 though

make sure you differentiate between
pentium pro a 686 so you are good to go
this would have been in the expensive desktops from back then
and i bet are the only ones still running
and "pentium" pre pentium pro which would be like 12 years old
pent presumably means "5" as in 586
if you have that one that distro won't run
and the computer needs to be in a longevity hall of fame
