Archive Manager in Ubuntu

Hi there,

My environment is: Windows 7==>Oracle VirtualBox==>Ubuntu 12.4 (32 bit).

I want to understand a few details about Archive Manager.

(1) Is it the same as Aptitude which I presume is a downloadable file?

(2) When I look at Archive Manager page (after I double clicked on its name) I see a long column of checkboxes. Only one is checked:

Quote:

APT based Installer using PackageKit's session DBus API (sessioninstaller).
The only word I understand here is API.

(3) What is APT?

(4) What is PackageKit?

(5) Does it make sense for me to check any other checkboxes?

One of the items down there is:

Quote:

Manipulate zoo archives (zoo).
What is zoo archives?

And finally:

(6) How do I use this package? Where do I start. How can I see some action

Thank you, - alexBB

No. Aptitude is a package management tool (install, update, remove packages). The Ubuntu Wiki has this to say about Archive Manager:
Quote:

Archive Manager

"Manages your archives and compressed files."

"You can use the Archive Manager application to create, view, modify, or unpack an archive."
(2) I don't know. I don't use Ubuntu, so I don't know what's in the list.

(3) APT (another package tool). Command line package manager that preceded Aptitude.

(4) Don't know that one either.

(5) See (4)

(6) You select the files and folders you want to include in the archive, then create the archive. When you start the tool, there should be a Help button in the Menu. Look there or on the internet via web browser for information.

Do you really drive a big rig as your name implies? It is funny. Anyway, thank you for the contribution. I appreciate it. - Alex

(2) Archive manager usually refers to file-roller. It lets you manage various type of archives

(4) From the Fedora PackageKit rpm: "PackageKit is a D-Bus abstraction layer that allows the session user to manage packages in a secure way using a cross-distro, cross-architecture API".

(5) I've seen zoo archives mentioned, but have never come across that type of archive

(6) I often use file-roller (or xarchiver) to:
a) extract selected files from an archive
b) replace the rdf file in a firefox extension (xpi file) with an updated version

RockDoctor, thank you. You know for a novice like me a good chunk of what you wrote sounds like gobbledygook. Still it is useful. I return to my previous posts again and again and gradually the meaning shows up like in old photographic development process. It does take time. So, you treat rocks? A rather nice occupation :-) Very funny. - Alex

Used to. I'm now retired from terrorizing 4 wheelers.
