Arch Linux + GNOME not gnome3 nor gnome-shell

Hello, I'd like to know if there's a way to install the old "normal" gnome, the one I used to have before gnome3 came out.
I followed a tutorial on how to install arch+gnome and I ended up with gnome3.

Thanks in advanced!

demencia.

Arch Linux is a "rolling release" distribution that always gives you the latest software versions. Gnome 3 is the current version of Gnome. When Gnome 4 comes out, your Arch system will "roll" to Gnome 4, and so on.

I'm curious if you've read the Arch Wiki page on the topic?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME

"Fallback mode is very similar to the GNOME 2.x layout (while using gnome-panel and metacity, instead of gnome-shell and Mutter)."

Thank you for your quick reply. I did read the wiki, and I am aware of the fallback mode, still its not even close to old gnome looked like. What I was wondering if there was a way to install the old gnome.

Thank you!

Since there is such a negative reaction to Gnome 3, I am expecting a Gnome 2 build to show up from the community soon. In the mean time, XFCE is a very good Gnome alternative.

Same thing happened with KDE4, there are a few community members maintaining a KDE3 build.

I don't know the answer, but I do know Gnome 3 is a hot topic on the Arch forums:

I managed to customize gnome3 to make it look as nice as I could. I read on the link you shared that I needed to press "alt+rightclick" to edit the panels, that was veeery helpful. At first it didnt work as I was running compiz, but i switched to metacity edited, and switched back to compiz.

Thank you very much snowpine and i hope someome finds this useful.

You could also switch to Xfce. You can make it look very similar to GNOME 2.
