Hello. I think your problem with entering a password is actually not a problem at all. When you type the password it is not showing you any feedback. That is okay, just type it anyways, then do the re-enter of it and test it out to see if it got the right password in there.

The other part of your post sounds like you want to enter a GUI (graphical user interface) rather than just be in the console.
Do you know how to use pacman yet? First you have to install the gnome package with pacman this is done by:
Code:
pacman -Sy gnome
After Gnome is installed the command to start the GUI is startx. This will take you to the GUI that is specified in the file .xinitrc (that can be found in your home directory). Since you want to go into Gnome you want one line to be in your .xinitrc that reads
Code:
exec gnome-session
(I can't remember if arch does that for you automaticly or not but you just as well check it out)

Okay, if Gnome fails to start or you want to change resolution or something like that you need to configure your settings. Try running xf86config. You may have to run it a few times to get your settings right.

Hope this gets you started! Good luck.

Scott

pacman -S iputils

iputils should already be on your hard drive so it will not have to connect to ftp to install it. After that you should be able to connect okay.
