Arch linux error: cannor open display


When I open startx it works fine bur I get an "cannot open display" error foe gnome-session. I already tried export DISPLAY=:0. ANY suggestions?

DISPLAY=:0 will only work if there is a X Server running on that display. Can you please explain a little more what it is you are trying to do? According to the man page for gnome-session: "This command is typically executed by your login manager (either gdm, xdm, or from your X startup scripts)." So there would already be a display running.

So, I take it you are booting to a terminal and typing "startx". If this correct, try, as root,:

kdm
or:

Code:
gdm
From there, you can login as a normal user and select the WM or DE you prefer.

Thanks! I was typing gnome-session which didnt work, but gdm did. Thanks again!
