apt won't work

hi, i put apt on my machine, no problem, i updated twice so that i wouldn't have that duplicate error, but when i run apt-get install synaptic it gives this huge list of dependencies that it says it needs. i thought apt was supposed to make it so i didn't have to worry about that. it says to do "E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).", which i have tried before and it completely erased everything on my system, so i don't want to do that again. please help, i can't find anything about this, so i'm guessing i'm just doing something stupid, i have fedora core2 x86_64 and i made sure to download that version of apt.

just guessing, but if apt can't find the dependencies you may not have an up to date/complete sources.lst. i know the suse version of apt for rpm comes with a small "starter list" that is nowhere near all that is available

might have a look at this: http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Fed...ositories.html

thanks, but will those sources work for x86_64? i was reading some other things on linuxquestions.org about this (which is why i posted, cause it never really answered my question) and it kept saying to use the sources related to you distro, so i'm just curious if i would use fedora.us or any of the others, or if i have to find specific ones for x86_64.

dag and freshrpms seem to have x86_64, not sure of the others
