apt- sources.list: http:// or ftp://?

hello,

I have some problem with the sources.list -- even after reading some threads on this forum.

Apprently apt-get update can't read this syntax:

http:/ftp.debian.org

on my sources.list. Here's one of the entries:

deb http:/ftp.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib non-free

What's the difference between ftp://ftp..... and http://ftp....?

However apt-get update likes this kind of mirror:

http:/ftp.fr.debian.org

but apt-get install says xmms 1.2.10 doesn't exist while I've checked the package list on the Debian website. Wouldn't a major mirror have this package? Should I get it from the Debian site itself?

I've run update a number of times though.

Thanks for your help!
