apt-get upgrade, better I wouldn't have done it
 

We use(d, actually) knoppix 3.8.1, all worked fine and we were happy.

Today we decided "to upgrade" our system. I verified by "apt-get upgrade -s" that we receive only "stable" and "testing" packages.

Run...

After computer restart, we've got surprises:
1) KDE is not running (asks for password, starts to log-in, then black screen, then KDE again asks for password,... )
2) NIS server YP binding takes ~10 min during each start-up. It is not responding to Ctrl-Z, Ctrl-Q, Esc, whatever.

Currently I'm saving my files for reinstall the Knoppix from scratch (using Windows :(

Any help is appreciated

PS I'm completely newbie to Linux, seems (well, only 6 month of user experience)

PS It is so very very sad, that apt-get doesn't work for "simple" user

This is knoppix, not a "pure debian" :). Apt do work for simple users using stable or testing. I don't really like apt pinning or mixing sources unless i really have to.

If you want something considered by lots of people stable, use debian stable(sarge) or change all references to unstable to stable or testing in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

You can run a pretty safe mixed distros flavour in Debian by using
apt-listbugs. It warns you of the bugs with several 'severity' degrees.
Then it's up to you to decide to upgrade or not. I did try to upgrade
Mozilla to the latest version, was warned not to, did anyway : result,
video flickering all the time. Exit Mozilla.
But at least you don't wake up after upgrading to discover your Gnome
or KDE all messed up.
And I heartily agree with mrcheeks. Knoppix is NOT Debian, Mepis and
Ubuntu either. Closest I found seems to be Libranet (not free of charge
for latest version).
