Apt-get and mutex error?

Hi i have been using linux on and off for a while now so i know a little but thought id post in here to be on the safe side.

I have recently moved to university and setup a debian system on my computer, it seems to be ok but obviously im connecting through their network so some ports are blocked.

When i try to use apt-get either it sits there doing nothing or it spews out some mutex (?!?!?) error.

Can anyone suggest a way around this?

Cheers,

Bez

Please copy the whole error message. apt-get uses standard http or ftp connections, so there should not be a problem.
