Strange !

Type apt- and hit TAB key twice. Does it list any command(s)?
Execute this too :

ls /usr/bin/apt*

Does this command give any output ?

Typing apt- and hitting TAB key twice gives:
apt add repository
apt extract templates
apt mark
apt cache
apt ftparchive
apt sort pkgs
apt cd rom
apt get
apt config
apt key

ls /usr/bin/apt* gives:
usr/bin/apt-add-repository
usr/bin/aptitude
usr/bin/apt-cache
usr/bin/aptitude-create-stat-bundle
usr/bin/apt-cdrom
usr/bin/aptitude-run-stat-bundle
usr/bin/apt-config
usr/bin/apt-key
usr/bin/apt-dcon
usr/bin/apt-mark
usr/bin/apt-extra-ct-template
usr/bin/apt-sortpkgs
usr/bin/apt-ftparchive
usr/bin/apt-url
usr/bin/apt-get
usr/bin/apt-url-gtk

I live in France. Maybe I should add a special repository site ? (I don't remember how to change them).

Can you tell us what you did, and the error messages?
What doesn't work?
You need to be root in order to use apt-get
Code:
sudo apt-get install foo
Kind regards

It's just the default 10.04 sources.list, I have made no changes. I don't have access to the usb stick right now.
It's the live "cd" except that it's a usb, so if I'm not mistaken I can't make any changes even if I wanted to.
By the way is it possible to install linux on a usb, rather than just a live cd, so that the modifications are kept ?

Yes. It is referred to as persistence so google Ubuntu persistent install usb or something similar.
