apt-get 'divert' problems installing kdevelop3

Hi, I have been trying to install linux for over a month now, and finnaly got it done. I come from a windows background so a lot of things are confusing to me.

The origonal reason to install a linux distro was to be able to program in a new environment etc etc. However I started to like it, everything ran faster even with my crippled old computer.

So I am trying to install Kdevelop version 3. I have installed linux using the latest knoppix CD, using option 1. Debian type install.

As you can see, everything is working. I have also succesfully upgraded using apt-get upgrade.

However I cant seem to install kdevelop3. I tried rebooting and starting fluxbox instead of KDE, to see if that was the problem, and I still get the following error:

Code:
root@mybox:~# apt-get -f install kdevelop3

I get the same message without the -f option, I even tried apt-get clean with no success. The manual seems hard to understand from my viewpoint as new to linux in general, but I am still trying to understand it all.

Any help would be appriciated.

First, one problem may have to do with the fact that Knoppix is NOT plain Debian, but my understanding is that Knoppix hard disk installs use the Debian repository for packages. So that is one thing that may be causing problems.

Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list file? That will tell us a little about what repositories you're working with.

Looking at the rest of the message from apt-get, it looks like you are sort of running a mixed mode. You may want to try first running apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. This may help remove/update packages to make your install more in line with what is in the repositories. Then try installing kdevelop3 again...

hmm k

Yeah, I totally realize that knoppix isnt totaly debian. I figured it out, after a few hours. I simply removed kdesktop lock. I didnt even know it was a program. After I removed kdesktop lock, I was able to remove the bluetooth app with no problems. Seems there are strange and hard to understand things when you install with a CD that wasnt meant for installation...but alas.

So I ditched it. I broke down and burned a netinstal CD, and installed the base system (debian). So now I am about to try and upgrade with kpackage...i am kind of afraid stuff will not work anymore. It asked me last time if I wanted to keep some files (Think they were config files?) and I said no install the package maintaner's... then KDE wouldnt start and X had problems too.

I just have no clue what i am doing. I will just have to keep plugging into the manual pages, experimenting, asking questions. I am pretty sure most of the problems I am encountering are simple to fix, somehow.

Now if I can just get the sound to work

I think I have to find the debian config menu but dont know where it is, because I remember setting something that had to do with media or sound and I chose the more secure option, which means my 'users' (Which is only me) cant use sound or CD? Blah i dont know, but i am determined to figure it out.

Ill keep on this forum too, but I am also going to read and post on the debian forums now, since I dont have plain knoppix installed anymore

Don't get me wrong, knoppix is cool, especially knoppix-std, if yer like Bond or something.

Two warnings: One is to keep your sources.list tidy and safe (ie not use experimental and stable in one file) and two is to install packages using apt-get, rather than kpackage or synaptic. It may at first be overwhelming but once you get the hang of it, it's much more powerful and user friendly.

As for the sound, you will find tons of threads dealing with sound issues in debian on this forum. Good luck

You can always add yourself to the audio group, I believe using adduser user group. Try man adduser to see for sure. Or you could apt-get install kuser which is a gui and will just let check a bunch of boxes...

I believe you want to be added to audio and cdrom to solve your two problems.
