application errors. where are they logged?

Having recently upgraded my Suse 8.0 KDE 3.0 to 3.1 using the files on their site, I seem to have managed to break a few things.

1. When I start Kate an error dialog flashes for a fraction of a second, then it reports a KDE crash.

2. When I run 'kdesu konqueror' to do super user file management it loads konqueror but then immediately after displaying it closes without giving any error.

So my question is, where would I look to find the error logging from these apps, there doesn't seem to be anything in /var/log/messages?

When I run kate from the terminal it gives this:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
KateCodeFoldingTree::clear()
KateCodeFoldingTree::clear()
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: DCOP communication error!

but when I run kdesu konqueror from the terminal it just gives the first two XLib errors but no further information, it just starts and then stops.

thanks.
